"This tells a slam-dunk story that water flowed through underground fractures in the rock," said Steve Squyres of Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., principal investigator for Opportunity. "This stuff is a fairly pure chemical deposit that formed in place right where we see it. That can't be said for other gypsum seen on Mars or for other water-related minerals Opportunity has found. It's not uncommon on Earth, but on Mars, it's the kind of thing that makes geologists jump out of their chairs."

Oh, and if a crawler (Google, Bing, Yahoo) catches those spammy posts, we'll pay dearly with ranking I'm afraid. Or am I mistaken?

#130 Re: Meta New Mars » Spammer » 2011-12-07 06:05:56

... Who's spamming all over. and you can only flag one post per minute, so we WILL get flooded sad

You're a wise man, Josh. Being able to see the value of someone who you don't agree with. My hat off to you.

  Sorry Glandu, I did *not* try to make fun of you, your English is *not* crappy, I'd even say it  is better than a lot of native speakers on the internet!
I'm Dutch speaking myself, French being my second language. smile

I don't like an intelligent aliens forum.  That is just asking for trouble.  We don't want the woo-woos coming here.

Past experience confirms this. We got maybe one in 1000 posts that was sane in that subforum. If that.

You're clearly a spambot. A human and grammar nazi would reply: 'WHICH member' tongue

Now *that* is good news smile There's a lot of Mars talk in the media, of course, people might be looking around.

I fully understand there was/is a huuge load of work to be done, and kudos for doing it 8)

re: screenshot: it was on another computer than the one I'm using now, I'll see if I can resurrect that page through the history when I'm back. The only problem with it was one doesn't get something that  explicitly says the transfer went all right. Pretty robust redirect system, though.

#138 Re: Meta New Mars » Rebirth of New Mars; Establishment of New Mars Editorial Board » 2011-11-23 13:10:48

Being lenient about political discussions, I guess. Some boards have an 100% moratorium on it, but it's sometimes very very hard to discuss something w/o mentioning it.

+edit+ I tend to agree with Grypd, but we know some people start foaming at the mouth the moment you mention the 'wrong' political party or country roll

... And that leads to quarrels. So moderating is mandatory.

I'm a bit concerned, the site is only half-functional, some pages direct to placeholders or worse...

Won't that have very detrimental effects on membership-numbers?

For instance, the member pages seem to be offline, I finally splurged on a 3 years membership to celebrate the return of the forums (yes I was *that* happy smile )

But... after paying, I didn't even get redirected to a valid page... So for all I know, that money might now be somewhere bouncing around in the intertubes...

#140 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » Compound parabolic reflectors - earth based zmp solar concentrator » 2011-11-22 07:46:17

50kw?? That's.... quite a lot! yikes

You're going to use those for yourself or upgrade them by using parabolas to re-sell or something?

In any case, you have to make sure they don't get too hot or your efficiency goes down dramatically, even before they get damaged... Some places on earth parabolas+solar cells don't mix too well  sad

#141 Re: Meta New Mars » Spammer » 2011-11-21 08:34:15

Getting rusty; checked that david (hawhaw!) but saw he didn't yet post or had a sig or website, so I didn't bother checking further....

So... Do we flag pro-actively from now on?  (remembers discussion with clark)

#150 Re: Intelligent Alien Life » Candor Chasma » 2008-05-01 05:40:40

Would someone please clarify the difference between the two topic headings, and what kind of material is expected to be posted under "Life on Mars". Surely, if I post something relating to the actions of intelligent alien life, then that post should be suitable and should qualify to be placed under the topic heading of "Life on Mars".

Zydar

When we're talking about things like artificial structures, it gets moved to intelligent alien life. It's that simple.

life on mars is about primitive life.
