all bad.
didnt zubrin say something about using the speeding neutrons to provide the power need to keep the reaction going in Entering Space?
like i said in the other thread, they violated the law, they should be punished. whats wrong with the concept of crime and punishment? its their own fault they didnt have the presence of mind to renew their visas.
if you were in this country illegaly, would you be dumb enough to go to the INS offices, without at least making steps to show your intention to get a new visa beforehand?
I wish people would realize that no country allows non-citizens full civil rights. it is ridiculous for the US to be demonized for punishing people who violated a law.
its bad enough that so many people use many of the benefits given by the US without paying taxes...lets not criticize the US's overly-friendly immigrant policies without bringing up the ways that america bends over backwards to protect legal rights.
actually josh, youre wrong. chinas military spending is hidden from even the cia...nobody knows quite how much they spend. i wouldnt be surprised if their spending equals, or surpasses ours. their military is quite huge too.
their military spending can also be covered up as "technology" research spending, which isnt done here, because we analyze every comma and period of the budget.
once every four years i believe.
i actually mistated. dvd-ram drives can write 9.4 gb of data...price of a drive is about $300. im going to wait until they have dvd-rams that can write to cd-r, rw, and dvd-r and -rws too. right now theyre only dvd-ram capable, but thats always the case for a new hardware piece.
by march, they should have dvd-rams for $200 that are fully compatible with any medium...im going to pick one up. im going to keep a dvd-ram in the drive to save all my schoolwork and misc stuff to, to reduce computer clutter. it actually helps keep the speed up.
We could launch missiles to the world powers like Russia and China, and drop thermonuclear devices from bombers 50,000 feet above the target.
i am well aware of our military capabilities...and they could launch them back too. MAD wouldnt have worked otherwise. Russia has enough nukes to kill us too, and china is, at the least, getting there. and i know that you need long distance ICBMS, which Russia has, china might be another story. nobody really knows.
alt, i wouldnt call america imperialist. economically, maybe. but the very fact that we let conquered countries remain sovereign, with US influence, yes, but still sovereign, puts the lie to that idea of Americas imperialism.
Who was stopping the Soviet Imperialism? That was for more direct and tangible. It's only because the Soviets collapsed that they dont get the same treatment as the US.
yes, but the way our civil service and government bureaucracy works, theres a lot of pork. im sure you know what this is. ill bet at least 10% of the military budget goes to crap every year. thats a lot of money. if they gave just 2% of that budget to NASA...we might see actual progress in space too.
maybe when greenspan retires...greenspan was a financial genius like no other. under greenspan...well, lets just say he covered up a lot of financial blunders by presidents in his time.
Daisy-cutter, tactical nuclear weapons, SDI, urban combat apparatus, infrared snipers, B-2 Bomber, Stealth helicopter, 1' resolution spy photos (at least enough to see if you're bald, and possibly enough to read the newspaper you're holding)... the list goes on and on.
heh. everything but SDI is old tech. and SDI....wont work. tactical nukes are years old. urban combat apparatus, uh, vietnam? snipers, im speechless...vast improvement. B-2 bomber is over 10 years old, and is hardly produced, if at all, any more. stealth planes arent really made anymore.
my point was, all this useless research is in addition to what we need to spend.
no...alan greenspan is the most powerful man in the world.
could do it either way, depending on what you wanted. it could flag data that matched certain criteria, and send it back "high priority."
seti has a thing called seti-at-home, where people download a program, and it uses their PC to compute "data chunks" of nearby space. it uses this flagging system, and the scientists pay special attention to flagged data. flagging data is also used in error reporting. its fairly common.
and yes, it could do highly detailed analysis...thats probably what they used for the ocean floor.
oh, and bush said he wanted to go to war. am i to assume he was lying? that our president is untrustworthy?
not that i dont already, hes an idiot on everything from the environment to foreign policy, but thats beside the point.
we couldnt. you really have a lot to learn.
how could 300 million people subjugate 5 billion people? the simple math is IMPOSSIBLE. theres no way. we constitute less than 7% of the worlds population. with the weaponry and resources that are lying around, it would never work.
and you try holding an american occupied territory in the middle east. it would be like a magnet for terrorism. and they wouldnt even have to overcome those nasty obstacles like travel and the INS.
you could have it do any grade of detail you want. to have it do low grade work would be a waste, and pointless. thats pretty much backwards. robots could do highly detailed, large area mapping. why wouldnt you want them to?
if they found something promising, and you got paranoid as to their reliability, send someone in to check.
our military budget is bloated. its wasted. you want to talk about the defense department? shoot. ive got personal ties to the defense industry. we build nothing new. we make a lot of spare parts for old planes. we build a new carrier every few years, but thats pretty much it.
most of the money goes into a bottomless pit of "R&D." the most lucrative thing thats come out of this for the past 10 years has been the F-22, a whopping 5 year production program that gave us less than 100 planes.
increasing the budget isnt the answer. reforming the department of defense is a much better idea.
china is a superpower too, you might want to ignore that, but they are. russia still has nuclear capabilities. please, youre exemplifying the hated arrogant american stereotype.
you really have no clue about the importance of diplomacy. the US cant do everything unilaterally. 50 years ago we could have. now we arent self-sufficient. we need things. we make a small fraction of what we consume. especially oil. saudi arabia could cut off our oil with a snap.
if he could have gone to war, he would have. he also wants to get re-elected, you know.
we had the world mapped before we were in space. and its not all by people. you cant have somebody walking around mapping. it just wont work. a robot, like i said, can map for a several mile radius. their computer can be programmed to calculate gradients, draw a 3d image, and anything else youd want. robots would be far more useful for mapping than people. a robot could see for kilometers underground for water, metals, minerals, life signs, geothermal vents, etc.
they could perform tasks automatically, like picking up sampling rocks. this is all at no risk to the people, who are needed for other things. i dont think you understand just how valuable robots are. take a high end computer programming course, or engineering course, and youll see.
how feasible are orbital facilities, like hangars, or at least assembly plants? i know the 90 day report gives them a huge price tag, but lets take this scenario:
the public doesnt like nuclear power. so, lets say we send up an orion-class ship piecemeal with HLV's. then, we have a facility put the parts together (it could be designed to have parts that fit together, duh). we send up the nuclear fuel and engines such that they are not active, and can't affect the environment (i dont know if nuclear fuel can be frozen?). finally, we send up the crew and supplies, sending a mining "city" to an asteroid.
obviously, this takes out the HLV aspect of nuclear vehicles, but it still allows them to have great benefits as interplanetary ships. i think that the benefits, and the sidestepping of terrestrial politics, is worth the cost, assuming it can be built for under $150 billion. if we get to mars, and get some level of manned exploration and development of space, i think that we could find a good chunk of funding from the private sector.
wont happen. the russians cant support a military invasion without US money.
Has Bush gone willy-nilly fighting battles in the region? NO! He prepares his case in front of the world, with all of his cards on the table, and waits to find evidence. The fact is, he HASN'T gone to war yet! He's waiting for a good reason to, just like everyone else. Don't say he's a blood-thirsty tyrant when he uses diplomacy first to correct problems!
actually, yes. he said he was going to war 9 months ago. then, when mounting political pressure made that impossible, he had to opt for a semi-diplomatic route. now, he wants war again. if you follow his words and actions, thats just what hes done. his administration has demanded that iraq tell the world it has wmd's. so, iraq is damned whatever it does.
they could be used in unison. besides, radar mapping could be used to deliver a miles wide radius. do you think we've stepped over every square inch of the world? no. but we've got nearly every pebble on earth mapped. the robot doesnt need to be directly over a point to map it.
robots could be given all kinds of cool equipment to do things people couldnt on site without large amounts of equipment.
diplomacy will only work when you give it an honest effort.
when you learn to read what somebody says, and understand the meaning, instead of what you want to see, you will get a lot more respect. having a big mouth will get you nowhere.
im a 4.0 gpa student too. ive got a 187 iq. i dont feel the need to brag about it. you want to go to war against a country that hasnt harmed us. whats so different about our bullying against iraq than terrorists blowing up our buildings? unless bush actually tries a diplomatic solution, truly tries, then there is no difference. we may be justified in going to war with iraq, when, and only when, we find the evidence bush has claimed is there. we havent found it yet.
and just because someone doesnt share your view, doesnt mean they should lead a short, miserable life. if you go around with that view, nobody will take you seriously in the real world. when did i ever say that i wasnt willing to die for my country? never. i am the most patriotic person in my family. but wasting lives to fight an unjustified war, that is far worse than anything iraq has done to us.
