#1251 Re: Not So Free Chat » What do you think of this? » 2002-12-21 11:37:18

no, cal.  the electoral college was put in place because the early american aristocracy felt that people werent well enough informed to vote.  usually, they went along with the peoples votes, but they had the power to vote however they wanted.  its basically saying that the people have no power.

and presidents tend to campaign in blocks.  if they only campaigned in major population centers, theyd lose.  the underlying motives in even New York are so complex that the candidate would have to campaign for months just to win the entire vote.  it wouldnt be effective.  so they campaign for women in general, blacks, etc.  But they move around the country doing it, so locals feel they get attention paid to them.

the electoral college does not facilitate democracy.  it is pointless, and goes against popular sovereignty.

phobos, would 20 tonnes be enough to support a mars direct launch?  i dont remember the number he gave for weight, and im too tired to look it up again  smile

#1253 Re: Not So Free Chat » President Bush - about bush » 2002-12-21 07:59:21

caltech, its easy for countries with less people to spend more per capita.  especially when the government has full control of funding.

and look at what you said.  the US has 33.8% of the spending, and only 10% of the armed forces.  some major money is being lost in that shuffle.

#1254 Re: Not So Free Chat » What do you think of this? » 2002-12-21 07:54:49

The only thing i disagree with you on, cal, is that based on the democratic system, bush shouldnt be in office.  gore got more votes.  because of an antiquated, elitist system, he squeezed in.  the electoral college should be abolished.

#1255 Re: Not So Free Chat » Leaglize drugs - say what u want » 2002-12-21 07:52:21

marijuana is far less potent than cigarettes.  they dont cause cancer like cigarettes do, and your lungs can be repaired.  the dangers of weed healthwise are mostly trumped up by tobacco companies.

however, they do pose a danger in that they definetly impair judgement.  i dont see how we can legalize alcohol and not weed.  i think that if we legalized weed, less people would smoke it.  in canada and amsterdam, the weed addiction rate is lower.

personally, i dont smoke any drugs, because i dont "need" to, but anything further up the ladder should be illegal, no question.

#1258 Re: Interplanetary transportation » cargo - just an idea » 2002-12-20 18:23:00

alright, ive rethought the idea after reading about the orion ships.

say we've got an orion class mining ship out in the asteroid belt, running on nuclear pulse engines.  could we build ships with huge cargo capabilities to dock with the mining ships every few months, and deliver cargo back and forth between mars and the asteroid belt?  or would the ship have to come back every time it had to deliver payloads?

#1259 Re: Interplanetary transportation » orbital facilities » 2002-12-20 18:19:10

the space elevator would be great.  would the space elevator allow us to avoid the need to launch anything from earth?

can you send me a link to that space elevator site again?  i would like to see how they intend to make it economical.  would the space elevator make space travel cheaper?  i really think that is the bottom line.

if the space elevator could carry the weight of say, your average HLV at a similar cost, i think the space elevator would allow human and development of space to really grow.

#1260 Re: Intelligent Alien Life » Is there any point in wondering? - Isn't the question answered, after all? » 2002-12-20 18:14:04

So. If you want to know the answer, theres only really two ways to find out. The long road: physics. The short road: the Bible.

an interesting bunch of points.  however, the bible is merely a book.  if we took every religious book and said it was the short road to finding god, we'd come out with nothing, because there are so many different answers to what god is.  you may believe the bible tells us what god is, and thats fine.  but you cant assume that because you believe that...i dont know how to phrase it...theory (sounds pretty harsh, but i dont mean it offensively), that its the only plausible answer.

it is possible to say that god is the universe.  in that case, god is not something to be worshipped, but observed.  should we worship the earth as a divine being as well?

i am in no way bashing any religion.  i am just pointing out that nothing in our current understanding is solid, uncontestable fact.  especially since the bible was written a good time after jesus died, and LONG after the supposed creation of the world, and adam and eve.

in my mind, the bible should be perceived the same way we perceive much of early A.D. science.  The bible presented the beliefs and explanations of people at the time it was written.  They didnt have telescopes back then, and they believed the world was flat, the sky was made of crystals, and the earth was the center of the universe.  surely, we can't say they were primitive people, and then embrace the bible as pure fact.  the bible had to be written by somebody.  much the same as the torah, or koran.  and the bible is partially founded on the writings in the torah...so you are relying on those fundamental truths as well.

this was probably the same guy who said the iraqis had a million man republican guard in 91

and the guardian is one of those sources i dont trust.  they lean far to the left.  way too far for me to base an objective opinion on.

#1262 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Project Orion Revisited. - Why not an Earth Launch? » 2002-12-20 14:48:23

This would be safer, cleaner, and produce more power than your average fission plant?

#1263 Re: Not So Free Chat » What if we lose? - Vietnam II? » 2002-12-20 14:44:54

oh, yes, and we have a volunteer military.  if a parent was afraid of losing their child, they could persuade them to leave the military.  our past armies havent always had that choice.

#1264 Re: Not So Free Chat » What if we lose? - Vietnam II? » 2002-12-20 14:43:16

and what are your military credentials?

as many people have said, american officials like to spread misinformation.

our first death toll estimate for wtc was over 10,000.  obviously, that was quite a bit high.  and dont tell me about casualties of war.  im not saying i support the war, im saying on a strategiclal standpoint, our major military officials have all said, that i have seen, from credible sources, that this war will be just as easy.

its easy to find a source online that says that X said this about that. thats why i prefer to get my information from real sources i can trust.

#1265 Re: Not So Free Chat » What do you think of this? » 2002-12-20 14:01:07

clark, you need to learn that speaking as if the other person is stupid for holding that view, doesnt make you right.

#1266 Re: Not So Free Chat » What if we lose? - Vietnam II? » 2002-12-20 13:57:51

clark, dont hold your breath.

Alt, once we had the city surrounded, i dont think we'd have to chase anybody in.  A few pinpoint raids, which we are very capable of, could do the trick.  We hit a guy in his truck in yemen, remember?

#1267 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Project Orion Revisited. - Why not an Earth Launch? » 2002-12-20 13:51:12

well, with all the new research in genetics, couldnt we, theoretically, do an experiment in which human cells in a lab, with normal genes, are subjected to nuclear-plant level radiation?  you could observe effects for as long as you wanted.  wouldnt this at least give us a better understanding of the issue?

#1268 Re: Not So Free Chat » What do you think of this? » 2002-12-20 13:40:52

im not talking about natural rights.  im talking about the rights given to taxpayers...room and board among them, education, etc.

My grandparents immigrated from germany.  somehow they managed to do it legally, and were american citizens within a few years.

#1269 Re: Planetary transportation » Crawlers - Segmented multilegged rovers » 2002-12-20 12:09:12

i dont think thats true.  you could brace the vehicle as much as you want.  you could also strengthen the legs with high tension cables, which can hold up huge amounts of weight.  legs provide an advantage, in that they could extend and contract, so a robot with legs could go as high or low as it wants, and in many directions.

i would think that construction would require a variety of autonomous robots, but overall, it would be better than using people, because it would be safer, cheaper, and it would free people up for other jobs.

#1270 Re: Not So Free Chat » What do you think of this? » 2002-12-20 12:02:10

its funny how people who like to wield the law in some situations forget it in others.  why?  because we feel bad for them?  if they were germans, or russians, or mexicans, or whatever, i would feel no differently.

mexicans are detained every day for illegal immigrancy.  wheres this righteous rage against those immigration policies?  no, its because a few people want to exploit a situation to make our government look bad.  yes, there are other ways to go about it...but they still broke the law, cut and dry.  stop ignoring that.

#1271 Re: Not So Free Chat » What do you think of this? » 2002-12-20 11:57:40

youre arguments are way off.

if a jew had blown up the towers, would it not be fair to focus more on jews in airport security checks?  Im jewish, at least partially, and i see nothing wrong with that.  yet in this country, we must pander to the criminals, by making likely suspects happy.

if you think arabs are treated badly here, take a look around the world.  and i dont think the government would create a lawsuit incentive, given our overly lucrative court system.  i doubt they were asked religious questions beyond what religion they were.

#1272 Re: Not So Free Chat » What do you think of this? » 2002-12-20 05:56:17

if they had brought proof they had sought visas, they would probably be legally immune to detention.

#1273 Re: Not So Free Chat » President Bush - about bush » 2002-12-20 05:55:15

caltech, if it werent for liberals, blacks and whites would still be segregated.  the majority senate leader is openly racist.  whos got the ugly head?

im personally independent...i like whoevers best for the country in my view.  all parties have downfalls...speding $200 million on an investigation on wheter clinton had sex is dumb.  the democrats letting bush and cheneys shady business ties, very shady ties, which are much more relevant to their jobs, is very telling.

#1274 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » "Star Wars" missile defense - practicle? » 2002-12-19 20:15:50

go through the poorer areas of cuba and see how much support castro has.

#1275 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » "Star Wars" missile defense - practicle? » 2002-12-19 20:00:00

josh, its far more dangerous to underestimate than it is to overestimate.  and we have reason to believe that our current knowledge doesnt begin to cover their true program.

and i agree, as i have said, the military is a huge bureaucracy.  but 100% of the vote seems a little, suspicious.  if youre going to rig an election, do it right.  and i wouldnt be surprised if the elections included select people only, or were supervised by the military.
