At the moment the ISS relies only on supplies delivered by Russian Progress cargo ships and of crews delivered by the Soyuz spacecraft.
With the failure in the third stage of the Molnia rocket delivering the light sail to orbit there is the problem that the Molnia third stage and the Soyuz rockets third stage are very similar. Until the fault can be found, recognized and a solution found the Russians have stopped all flights of Soyuz rockets.
The ISS supply run is now in jeopardy.

There is one serious problem that we have ignored with this thread. The problem that failed the mission. It was a failure in the third stage of the Molnia rocket that caused the rocket to not make the height.
But the third stage of a Molnia rocket is also the exact same third stage that is used in Soyuz rockets and if a fault occured there then it could also happen to the much more important soyuz.
Moscow understands that the fault must be found and the cause understood and rectified. Until then there will be no more Soyuz launches.
Since the Death of Nicola Calipari Italy has not exactly been very forgiving of tresspasses against its sovereignty. This does hurt the USA in the court of world opinion and is likely to cause real trouble to the current pro USA goverment of Italy. They will likely have no choice but to actively demand the handover of the USA agents and to investigate who gave the orders.
The USA will not hand over the agents and this will result in a very serious diplomatic incident. Italy will likely tell the USA that its base near venice having been involved in actions against the constitution of italy then that base should go.
I still think that a solletta array would produce enough heat to do this certainly in the case of the CO2 stored in the south pole. Though maybe some form of direct focused light could be used as well.
you beat me to it,
have been aware of this issue for a few years.
Yeah, it's been an issue for awhile now but thanks to these Supreme asshats we've got precedent now. It just makes me want to beat these people with a rolled up copy of the Constitution. Now that would be good public use.
Interesting point to add, Just what does the constitution actually protect. It only has as much power and protection as those in charge are willing to let it happen. And how much they can get away with.
Much better to have a basis on a common law. (Vaque plug to own countries system )
Still have to consider locking and replacing this thread.
A Corporate Democracy..... :hm:
Power by vote of shares.
Still Lockes life, liberty and property was an attempt to create a society seperate from the Feudal property and legal systems that where then current.
How would an authority be created that would have by the definition the power to grant ownership plots of land on Mars etc. Historically it has always been by a goverment that has the capability to defend that land that has given this power.
If there is no such authority so created then it comes down to the semi legal "I own it" therefore I can sell it that these companies offering plots as gimmicks do. In that case better start buying as they are the legal authority.
But im sure one day some country or group will make it to Mars and start heavy settlement and will be taken to court by someone who has claimed the land from Earth.
For the money that was spent it would have made more sense just to "create" an unmanned SDV that would have sent the space station into space in more or less three shots and still weighed more than the current ISS was planned to be.
Skylab was sent up in one shot and was a success except it was "sacrificed" in utility for the shuttles creation.
Another benefit would have been the creation of a heavylifter years ago.
But then this would make sense and since when did politics make sense......
The simularity between Nazism and Communism are very striking, Im with CC on this they are very close except on certain key points.
And Nazism was an extreme version of fascism in the first place. Actually it can be said that Nazism is closer to Communism as was expoused by Stalin than to Fascism from Mussolinis view point.
The only difference I see is that Communism was to spread and promote its ideal everywhere and Fascism/Nazism was to just keep it dedicated to the country it came from.
So where Nazism/Fascism promoted its country Communism tended to denigrate its country.
Okay, now how do we hold Iraq together without Saddam-like brutality?
*Why ask us? No one here has any political power or an office on Capitol Hill, etc.
And then there's the viewpoint that America -will- fail, no matter what.
Seems pointless, doesn't it?

Ah but you live in a democracy and in the end you ellect your leaders and it is through them that you as the people Govern!
Without rehashing old arquements the USA did in all likely go into Iraq without too well a plan worked out for what to do when it had won the war. Fighting a war is a whole different matter than occupying the country afterwards. Best way to put it is to slip on the velvet glove as a mailed fist just will not work.
Still the USA can still "win" if that term can even be used and come out of Iraq with a friendly western leaning positive regime in existence. Its getting the current Iraqis to think that way and to hammer "politically" the opponents of that idea.
The one problem with a country like Iraq fragmenting is that it will lead to a very nasty civil type war as the various factions and ethnic groups fight to get there slice of the pie. It happened in Yugoslavia, When India/Pakistan got its independence in 1948 and so many numerous times in Africa.
But what matters for the west is what ethnic group will be holding which bit of Iraq. Im not happy at having the very pro Iranian Shi'a majority in control of the Oil which when combined give Iran and the Iraqi Shi'a a very large percentage of the worlds supplies at hand.
In relation to Opec it would cause the Iranians and there natural allies to have more of a share than the USA's ally Saudi Arabia and a more pivotal control of the worlds oil trade.
Add in the trouble Turkey another western ally will recieve from a Kurd republic on the doorstep and the west could well hamstring itself.
$250 million for a mission that will cost probably about $1500 million gives me only one impression.
They want NASA to divert funds from somewhere and so gain political capital from it. There can only be one place this money can come from and that is the CEV and the space exploration iniative. If NASA has to pull over a billion dollars to make an unprepared mission then the Moon Mars iniative will fail or be dealt a body blow it may never survive. It also leads to if you could cut then why not now politics. It leads to needing to fly another mission for the shuttle and could creep the shuttle past its retirement date. The worst thing though is that this underfunded cash if not used to put together and fly a mission to hubble will also lead to political gain as the next time that Griffin and NASA go cap in hand to pay for the next part of the Iniative they will be met with but we funded a mission to save the Hubble and you did not do that. So why give you money for what we have not asked you to do.
This is nasty politics and has nothing to do with science. It makes the committee look like "good guys" and whatever NASA does into a weaker bargaining position and weakens the Moon Mars program.
One of the problems we face in people going to Mars and spending long times in micro G is that bone loss and muscle wastage makes them less strong. If it takes us 6 months to get to Mars and we have used no means to provide a form of gravity then our astronauts will be weakened in the low G of mars and this could prove to be a mission failure point.
One alternative is to provide astronauts with Bionic exoskeletons and with this actually make our astronauts stronger than they are here on Earth. The possibilities for construction are endless.

With a manned mission to the Moon likely to be happening in the next decade and with luck future missions to Mars it means a lot of people running around outside there craft.
Spacesuits from the Appollo age are almost 40 years out of date and our advances in material and electronic science does mean that there will be a lot better systems for our Astronauts to run around in.

This suit will allow geological work to be done even when by a non geological trained astronaut and increase mineral and resource knowledge automatically.
Japanese military and space equipment generally costs more than equivalent US equipment, not less. Setting up an advanced industrial capacity requires a lot more equipment than many people seem to think, and it gets much worse if you stupidly build humanoid robots rather than using a simpler and more efficient design.
The Japanese Moon base plan looks like pure fantasy.
Look at their F-2 Fighter plane.. It is basically a sexed up copy of the 30 year old US F-16 design, only they can't seem to make it cost less than an FA-22....
Yes the F2 has gone overprice but then again many programs have. This plane though it looks like an F16 is not an F16 it is larger and packing a much more advanced wing and avionics package, it is also partially stealthy. It also uses the F16s F110 engine it is this that encourages the F2 to be the shape it is. And since it was started as a partnership between the USA and Japan as an experimental programme it had a lot of changes.
Why has the cost overun occured well actually it is quite largely the fault of the united states goverment and lockheed martin the prime contractor. The United States refused Japan certain exports and insisted for the ones it did have that they be made by an American company.
And of lockheed martin it has not really recently had a good reputation when it comes to cost overuns look at the JSF as an example.
We will have to accept that the Japanese are a player in there own right in Lunar exploration and resource utilisation. If they do increase the budget of NASDA then it can do what it says. Differently than NASA plans but maybe no less effective.

Well if we look at Astronautix you will see that the H1 was a licensed version of the USA's Delta. It had a 100% launch success rate and cost in 1990 $90 million. The H2A though is a JAXA design and though it doubles the capacity to orbit the maximum cost is in 1990 prices $90 million.
The problem is the H2A failed once and there is a lot of research going into why. The basic H2 though was expensive and has since been cancelled. What appears to have happened here is that they spent a lot of money to get its design to work but designed to be made cheaply.
The problem is reliability but this can be improved.
And humanoid robots are the buisness of NASA as well as JAXA the Robonaut program will show you. It allows for the use of ready made tools instead of brand new indigenous ones for each type of Robot used. This saves a lot of time and money and allows for Human centric developments to be used too. And there is nothing to stop the use of a specific design for a specific purpose ie robotic dumpsters will not be humanoid. JAXA just plans to use the best shape for the best purpose.
100X? Huh?
Japan can hardly get their H-2A rocket to fly reliably
True they are having a problem with that launcher. Still it is something that they can solve and they have spent a lot of time to see what caused the problem and how to sort it.
Maybe he only found out when he discovered the name of the fighter pilot that destroyed the Death star and he was from tatooine and strong in the force.
He would have then just added 1 + 1 = 2 and since this boy was the nephew of his brother and named skywalker and strong in the force a bit of a shock for him I believe.
And leia though was adopted out of the family her last name was Organna so no surprise he did not recognise her.
I agree the cost of any thoughts of colonisation mean it is totally out of the question if sent from Earth. Using lunar minerals and the possibility of cheaper access to space could bring it to possibly within a financial possibility.
Still this is many years in the future and technology advances should allow some of the restrictions we face to be reduced or even negated.
Heres to an interesting future, I hope, but then again we have to start somewhere.
Taking it a bit off key for now.

An agreement has been reached as to who pays for the cost of any enviromental damage done and if cleared up by another country then it will be "charged" to the one responsible.
Happy Birthday, Shaun!!!
and now time for the band :band:

Still have a couple of the amber nectars for me!!!!
What Hilary Clinto does have going for her is that her husband is Bill Clinton.
From my observations of the USA there is a desire to return to what life was like before 9/11 and the war on terror. Then the USA had a budget surplus, it had no apparent enemies and the economy was booming.
*...and many in the American populace, including myself, were very tired of the scandal-ridden Clintons. That factor alone can't be underestimated. The endless *personal* scandals were wearisome.

True but they where all more or less "his" scandals and she appeared the good dutiful wife. That can play both ways.
Well I have seen the wreckage and debris and sheer junk around Mcmurdo base and what ever you do dont consume the snow near the base. It is heavy with PCBs
So just how do you think these derricks are going to work. Quess what the ice moves. The only way to operate is to heat the ice and keep it away. I have yet to find an oil operation that does not leak and in an enviroment that basicly stores up the pollution this is a problem.
And what economic loss. the only trade there is tourism and it is growing. It also relies on the area being reasonably untouched apart from the factory site that is Mcmurdo sound.
And there wont be any industrial activity too many fingers in the pies and the 1961 treaty sure resembles the law of the sea except its a lot tighter and the law of the sea has more or less cancelled undersea mines.

Interesting is the opinion that most elections are decided by what are the free voters the undecided ones. Hilary will pick up a lot of support for being a woman but also loose it from the diehard anti feminists.
Yes she has a chance of being the next president and trust me having a women premier is not that bad. Look at what ours did for Britain and if you want ask the French who discovered her handbag had bricks in it
