No, you just couldn't see the forest for the forest, you decided to look at the trees.  After having talked to a couple of people from the forum, I'm fairly certain that they felt that my analogy was perfectly solid  cool

I think that somebody should write a programming program.  It really shouldn't be that hard for an experienced programmer...

But it doesn't mean that it's innefficient.  The processor could also be working harder, because you have more peripherals, and a more demanding motherboard.  Water-cooling might work for a tablet, but I'm not sure.  You could certainly get more raw power out of a conventional PC, and you could have more application verstaility, because there is more room for expansion.

Stupid and narcotics trafficking are completely different animals.  Let's not oversimplify the issue here.

Josh, if you can't see the analogy, then I think it's better to leave it alone.  It's quite apparent, and I can see that you'll find a way to avoid it no matter what.

#581 Re: Civilization and Culture » Paperless Mars » 2003-02-10 13:45:50

could be, but thats why PCs are better, they have longer lives because they have more air and space.  There are a lot more cooling options!

#582 Re: Human missions » Mars: A business plan - lets get at it » 2003-02-10 13:42:37

Right, it doesn't have to be NASA scientists-a lot of the "MIT" projects are done by outside scientists/engineers who simply get MIT grants, and so MIT gets to put their name on the research.  From my observation, NASA operates in a similar fashion,

That has no bearing.  Have you ever seen "Glory"?  Remember the part where Morgan Freeman calls Denzel Washington a nigger?  And in context, he was obviously not calling all blacks niggers-he is black!  I view this in the same way, he was pointing out the people who adhere to a stereotype, not all people of that race!

And I don't believe that blacks are inherently dumb.  I think that environment means more than heredity.  Family included.

#584 Re: Human missions » A Fleet Plan - Shuttles, OSPs, and beyond » 2003-02-10 13:31:22

well, thats my point, since you have an existing assembly line, you can modify the size or customize the vehicle with little difficulty.  Since you could redesign every few years, you could use new concepts, and you have 3 different concepts at any one time (since you phase out every 15 years with a new design every 5).

#585 Re: Intelligent Alien Life » Solution to Fermi's paradox? - an idea » 2003-02-09 21:23:55

You obviously don't know all the work that goes into producing an f-15.  A car is simple engineering, a personal plane is like a mosquito compared to an f-15.  Come on, Josh, stop trying to find a way around the obvious point.  It's not working.

#586 Re: Civilization and Culture » Paperless Mars » 2003-02-09 21:20:10

You can actually customize a PC more than a laptop  tongue

But, processor is not the end-all measure of power.  The motherboard is probably more important.  With a dual-line motherboard, only available for a regular PC, you get full potential out of your 2 ghz athlon (which are, imho, better than pentiums).  They dont have these for tablets!

You could have touch screens and keyboards, for personal preference, and certain applications (ex. drawing) require handwriting!

And how often do we say things about Germans-"You damn Nazi" or Jews, "Cheap Jew."  It happens all the time, it's not about being racist-O'Reilly was specifically referring to a group of people that create a stereotype for the rest of the innocent population.

#588 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » Mars as an alternative to War. - Can space exploration replace War? » 2003-02-09 18:48:50

Um, because a robber doesn't send a few million dollars worth of narcotics illegaly over the border?

And besides, wetbacks to me is no different than a hoodlum.  And if he had said niggers in referring to the blacks who go out and murder people, I don't know if i'd have a problem with it.  O'Reilly doesn't claim to be politcally correct.  I certainly wouldn't interpret it as him calling all blacks niggers, and trust me, I'm no racist, I have an African aunt (yes, and a chinese aunt, don't even bother figuring out my faimily tree).  If someone fits a stereotype, I see no problem using it.  Those people give Mexicans a bad name, not O'Reilly.

#589 Re: Intelligent Alien Life » Solution to Fermi's paradox? - an idea » 2003-02-09 18:42:01

What if you didn't have plans?  You are deliberately missing the point!  I can see a computer, does that mean I could build it?  If only one person, or family, had the expertise to build something, and you didn't know what methods or materials they used, you can't build it, period.  I can see an f-15, can I build it?  And seeing the plans won't help you if you can't read them!  What if they were in another language?

#590 Re: Intelligent Alien Life » Solution to Fermi's paradox? - an idea » 2003-02-09 18:31:35

Josh, again, we have that issue of how you choose to use your allotment of energy!

What if I built a superduper energy enhancer that nobody else could build?  Why, I could build a nicer house, a nicer spaceship, and so on.  I don't have to be imperialistic, but I could be better off!  Is this wrong?  No, I worked to achieve this condition.  Is it a resource inequity?  Yes, but it is not immoral, because I put in the work and expertise to acquire it!

#591 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » Mars as an alternative to War. - Can space exploration replace War? » 2003-02-09 18:12:08

What do you think about O'Reilly calling that one guy a Mexican Wetback?

Well, I finally saw the transcript.  Now, this is a case of people looking for something to slam O'Reilly for.  He didn't call "that one guy" a Mexican wetback, he was referring to the people who bring drugs and narcotics over the border.  And he's right, they deserve to be called wetbacks-they bring nothing but narcotics and corruption.

He wasn't calling all Mexicans wetbacks, its quite apparent in the transcript, without even seeing the show, who he was referring to!

#593 Re: Civilization and Culture » Paperless Mars » 2003-02-09 16:45:16

the speed was in relation to computers-tablet PCs are not really in the category i was talking about-for definition sake, tablet PC=palmesque, computer=laptop vs. PC.

I wouldn't say that laptops havent been explored, it's just that it's so much easier to design a PC because you can make it bigger and thus easier to keep cool.  Also, you can put in more expansion slots, and bigger hardware.  There really isn't much room in a laptop to put in slots or new hardware.

#594 Re: Human missions » Do you support a Nuclear Space Initiative? - Poll Results. » 2003-02-09 16:42:35

actually, bush has approved permits for new construction, which is a good sign!

#595 Re: Civilization and Culture » Paperless Mars » 2003-02-09 15:40:53

I guess that would be best, although you could always just go to a link hub to download and upload your information!

Tablet books are a good idea, especially if you can write to them.  For example, you can write a journal on a tablet, or a blueprint, mission briefing, etc, upload it to the server, and send it out to earth.  You could read any mission updates, news, and so on from earth.

I prefer PCs for computing, because laptops simply aren't as powerful and reliable.  You can fix a PC much more easily, and you can keep oodles of spare parts, which are cheap.

#596 Re: Human missions » Do you support a Nuclear Space Initiative? - Poll Results. » 2003-02-09 15:36:08

I had heard 2,000 years without breeders.  Maybe it was 2 millenia?

Nuclear reactors arent banned here-but breeders aren't used because of the supposed weapons potential.

#597 Re: Human missions » Do you support a Nuclear Space Initiative? - Poll Results. » 2003-02-09 15:14:24

Josh, banning recycling is a good way for anti-nuke people to create an issue-they can now say that the waste has to be stored, which is terrible for the environment.

They say that recycling can be used to make weapons-grade plutonium...but if anybody wanted to do that, they would do it anyway!  I think the best solution is to have breeders, but have them monitored, as the North Korean reactors were.  This ensures that breeders aren't used for weapons.  Of course, this eliminates a huge part of the anti-nuke incentive, so anti-nuke people rail against it as much as possible!

#598 Re: Civilization and Culture » Paperless Mars » 2003-02-09 15:06:42

Wired lans are 10x faster, and all you need is a few wires and a hub.  Not really much to deal with if you plan intelligently.  It's also pretty much immune to funkiness in transfers due to external factors.  A thunderstorm can interrupt a wireless LAN.

#599 Re: Meta New Mars » Events Calendar » 2003-02-09 12:23:51

sure, i think it's useful...maybe any major space event could be put up, too.

#600 Re: Space Policy » Why Not Offer A "Bounty" For A Mars Mission - 10 Billion dollars for the first » 2003-02-09 10:57:32

Oh dear.  This is a load of crap that i would stash away with Alexander Sheppard's rants.  There is a reason why 300 million people outproduce the entire EU.  The middle class is immense, so it's not "an elite."  Look at American culture, it relies around the middle class.

Democracy and capitalism go hand-in-hand.  They both are based on the whims of the people.  The 20% figure is only due to the sub-par education here, and around the world.  No country of similar size to America has a better education.  It is easier to provide education to a smaller group of people.

There are "new money" people all around the world.  I would actually say most of the upper class of America is old money-you only see the new money because of their opulence.  The old money sits in the background, wanting to live apart from the rest of society.

Dictatorship of the rich!  Please, come to America sometime.

Oh, and by the way, most Americans I know are average weight, not obese, so you might want to get your facts straight.
