#26 Re: Human missions » First human on Mars. Man or woman ? - like in the title » 2003-11-17 04:39:45

Wim

I didn't know that this topic has already been discussed. Sorry for that.

No your butt doesn't lo... wait a second isn't there a dedicated topis on this.

#27 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » question - nanotechnology » 2003-11-16 15:06:25

Wim

One more try with this link ? or this one ?
It's this one ?
a couple more on this link or
this one.

I go to sleep now ...

#28 Re: Human missions » No plans for Mars mission in near future - sketchy details » 2003-11-16 14:40:05

Wim

I found this on the Nasa site. It has been there for a long time ... I didn't read all of it but I think there isn't any timeline mentioned.

#29 Re: Terraformation » When should we terraform » 2003-11-16 14:21:45

Wim

Wow hold it there please. Even in the year 2358 there will still be problems on earth (if it's still there). You don't mean that we shouldn't go before all those problems are solved, do you ?

#30 Re: Human missions » First human on Mars. Man or woman ? - like in the title » 2003-11-16 12:38:55

Wim

Do you think the first person on Mars will be a woman or a man ?

#31 Re: Mars Rovers / University Rover Challenge » Interplanetary Hitchhiker - ...Finnish Rover Needs a Lift! » 2003-11-16 12:28:42

Wim

Probably when Finland joins the ESA projects, the rover will get a place on one of the next rides to Mars ?

#32 Re: Terraformation » When should we terraform » 2003-11-16 11:34:38

Wim

I do have to admit that the terraforming is not on my priority list, maybe that's why I think it will not be done in my lifetime.
I'm absolutely positive that I will watch and read about humans presence on the red planet.

No, I'm just playing around with the avatar thingy ...

#33 Re: Other space advocacy organizations » Life to Mars Foundation - Well, Who are they? » 2003-11-16 11:05:03

Wim

If I click the link a nice white page shows up or am I missing the clue/glue yikes

#34 Re: Terraformation » When should we terraform » 2003-11-16 10:57:49

Wim

I didn't mean it can't be done now, what I meant was that I think it will not be done for a very long time (in my lifetime that is)

#35 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » question - nanotechnology » 2003-11-16 10:54:49

Wim

Some other links where nanotubes are used ...
displays
superthreads

I also found this link.

what am I doing ? copy pasting google in here ?
???

#36 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » question - nanotechnology » 2003-11-16 09:48:35

Wim

Rxke, I think the link that you were looking for is this one. I't about the SpaceElevator.

#37 Re: New Mars Articles » Congress Hears Mars Society Proposal - Article at MarsSociety.org » 2003-11-16 06:45:41

Wim

Indeed to me it seemed also overoptimistic about the 30M$ each but I think he had to say it that way just to shorten his 'time to speak' and indeed sometimes if you are limited in time to defend your case you have to (over)simplify things just to get the 'other(s)' interested and asking more questions (and that did happen ...) about that 'simple' approach.
And as long if you have the right answers and know the whole thing indepth (which Zubrin has) they can fire as many questions as they want until their kwowledge-of-the-subject is reached.
I thought he got his message through. Although the *weird* smileys on the other side of the table troubled me at one point but then Zubrins book got onto stage and that changed from *weird* smile into *interesting/curious* sort of smile.

I vote yes.

#38 Re: Human missions » china - manned spaceflight » 2003-11-16 06:01:21

Wim

Let the chinese have a go on Vodka, who knows how many moonbases they will construct then ... tongue

I'm still playing around with the avatar thingy. I kinda like it.  big_smile

#39 Re: Civilization and Culture » Lets talk funding » 2003-11-16 05:57:33

Wim

Somewhat more seriously, once the folks at Bechtel or Kellogg, Brown and Root (Halliburton) complete the rebuilding of Iraq perhaps they would be interested in a $500 billion or $1 trillion dollar contract to build a Mars settlement.

Somewhat more seriously. . .

You mean they will invest their own money in a Mars-base ?? ??? I don't think so. Who will pay them to construct it ?
Or am I misunderstanding your statement ?

#40 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » Crime and Punishment - Speculation » 2003-11-16 05:50:55

Wim

But than again will he do a good repairjob ? I seriously doubt that. A bit of fresh Martian air for that person won't hurt (the rest of the community).
Or maybe roadconstruction, won't be that much to do wrong with ...

#41 Re: Human missions » The Case for the Moon » 2003-11-16 05:41:58

Wim

China will go to the moon and put an outpost there.

Looks doubtful within the next fifteen to twenty years.  I mean, China's next manned spaceflight will be "before the end of 2005."  They have the technology, but the political / military leadership behind their program isn't making it a high priority right now.  Their efforts will be aimed at space stations and possibly military space efforts.

I'm betting that China will push their dates closer to today. In this article they say 2005 -> first manned spaceflight. Well (I hope) they stick with 2 or 3 flights and go for the moon (+ base) sooner than (or then) expected. Or am I too optimistic ?  ???

#42 Re: Terraformation » When should we terraform » 2003-11-16 05:29:56

Wim

Terraforming can not be avoided, but I stick with the idea that humans should first settle and then terraform. For me for now it sounds like too far away and I'm 99,9 percent convinced that it won't happen in my lifetime  sad  but it will happen.

#43 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » question - nanotechnology » 2003-11-16 05:22:26

Wim

Outloud thinking again ...
A lot of the threads about sending people to (not on earth) places reflect directly on NASA. We shouldn't forget that there is ESA spending money and will be increased (the link is in dutch sorry for that but I couldn't find any other link in English), there is Russia -- ok I know all about the lack of money etc. but still ... -- and there is China I think will be play along. Japan maybe ? The X-prize will have an impact (link)
I guess what I want is that I like to see science evolve in a way that I can use it (payable sub-orbital flight) or be part of it or at least watch it on tv/net.

#44 Re: Life on Mars » Mars Sample Return - Threat of back-contamination » 2003-11-16 04:51:49

Wim

I agree with the fact that it doesn't always have to be bad. I mean, how many movies for instance have the *good alien* (alias E.T.) in them ? I can think of E.T. (did I mention that before ?) but otherwise it is nowhere near good.
Mars Attacks, Independence Day, Alien(s), ... to name a few

Life on Mars will be found ! (in microsize, not cowsize fcours)

#45 Re: Unmanned probes » Mars Odyssey THEMIS true color pics - ...almost » 2003-11-16 04:35:58

Wim

Can you imagine yourself as the first human to step on the surface of our planetneighbour and looking at this ...
Mars
That has to get you goosebumps (is that correct English ?)

#46 Re: Human missions » The Case for the Moon » 2003-11-16 04:28:41

Wim

wether it is bodyfuel or other enginefuel... hihi
sorry

#47 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » question - nanotechnology » 2003-11-16 04:26:36

Wim

found it ...

Well I think a lot of people think that way. What way ? Well, putting tons of billions into a venture like Mars is too much for now. Let the *science* evolve for a while (30 years or so) up to a point where that same venture to Mars is 10 percent of the original price that was calculated/estimated 30 years ago.
And that is too bad. For one, that I will have to wait another lifetime (?) and second that pioneers are the ones who can get things started.
In another thread some 'guest' basically spit on Adrean I think it was, for the fact that Adrean participated on MDRS and wrote in his log all about his frustrations etc.
Well isn't it possible that when you don't start an 'adventure' tike MDRS now but instead launch it directly to Mars so to speak, all the frustrations come out then. (I'm just thinking outloud)
The same for nano. Start it now, don't wait.
Same for Mars, now is the time
Back to the pioneer-time Ahooo !!

Dit anibodie sea miy englich ?

#48 Re: Terraformation » When should we terraform » 2003-11-16 02:45:56

Wim

When I read your post, I doubted it at first, but I didn't take a look at the white paper + CRN website.
I also read somewhere else on the net that as of speaking millions of dollars/euros are pumped into nanotechnology (military ?) Does anyone know if there are any applications that use nanotech today ?
Isn't this off topic ??

#49 Re: Human missions » china - manned spaceflight » 2003-11-15 13:06:40

Wim

Vodka and double vision, maybe something for nasa/esa ?

#50 Re: Human missions » The Case for the Moon » 2003-11-15 13:03:31

Djeezz, who in budha's name has time to make such a *song* and site. It got a smile on my face though ...
