Euler,

I have a solution to the solar system travel problem.

50 mw nuclear reactor  , thrust at .02c, and 17 acceleration tubes all producing 1 newton of thrust.
A tech nightmare for sure, but a simple solution.

Now we have a 17n power golf cart smile

Ahh i see what your saying.

How can light be a measure of time if light comes in different wavelengths?
Close?

Lets pretend that only the speed of light is a measure or time.
time=c or c=time

Many forms of light can be created with different wavelengths, but the speed of the light is always the same.

Lets pretend that to create a photon you can use any 2 atoms.
Lets also pretend we know how to make them smile
If you collide 2 hydrogen atoms at a set  collision speed and produce 1 photon, you get a set wavelength, but time sets the speed of the escaping photon.

I think its possible to have no time for the light, but different oscillations for the light.

Hope i was on the right track on that?

Euler,

I had a feeling it would be golf cart like.

So it looks like a great vehicle for getting un manned probes to the nearby stars.

But not much of a vehicle for traveling around the solar system, unless you have a gigantic nuclear reactor and a lot of fuel.

Now wouldn't that be unusual if we had machines visiting the stars, but still had trouble with visiting our own solar system. smile

I guess at some point the weight of the nuclear reactor as it is sized up will limit it's reason to be there.
At 50mw with a thrust of .36c no real need to go any faster exists.

The real question seems to be, will it be a Ferrari or a slow golf cart. smile

And i just knew i should have broken out my calculator for the math smile


Anyone have any thoughts on producing say 3mw of conventional power in space .?
The waste product from the production of the electricity needing to be used as particle accelerant.

Just thinking out loud here.
And hoping for a few replies about my noisy thoughts. smile


If a 50mw nuclear generator can produce .33c.
If the initial mass of the spaceship is 1/3 and the particle accelerant is 2/3 the total mass.
It should be able to obtain a maximum speed of .22c  ?

Obviously for interstellar distances nuclear is the way to go.
And if no humans are on board then why not 100mw or 500mw?

But if you reduce the thrust to say .02c, then the mw requirements also reduce proportionally.
I calculate that to produce thrust of .02c will require about  1mw or less?
In the above formula of 1/3 ship  2/3 fuel.
We should be able obtain  a maximum speed of .015c ?

1mw could be produced with conventional non nuclear means.
And if we are very sneaky we could use the waste product from the production or electricity as the particle accelerant.?

.015c gets us around the solar system in short times.
With a nice protective magnetic field for the people inside.
Well actually .0075c because you will need to turn the ship at whatever the 1/2 way point is.

I haven't done any calculations in change of velocity/time.
That is beyond my math skills. smile

That might be the un doing of this idea, and may drastically alter power requirements.
If the times are to long to obtain any useful speed.

As for deep space 1 as i understand, it has a pretty slow  velocity/time.

If I'm correct your are referring to Einstein's twin theory.
One goes on a stellar visit at high speeds, and one stays home ?
When the traveling twin returns to earth some years later, the one that went is younger.


I like the idea of your thought experiment, it raises some puzzling questions, and it is in much better terms than i tried to do without coffee smile .

Since the TV broadcast is at light speed and sent at that speed, wouldn't the aliens see a normal TV broadcast with no clocks being slowed down, and you in normal motion?

Some time dilation would occur for you the space traveler because your are moving at 50% the speed of light.
But the TV broadcast at light speed????

Or the TV broadcast simply takes pictures of your time dilation and sends them at light speed.

I had to think about that for a while smile


What the aliens see.

Since it really takes you twice as long to arrive as the TV broadcast does, it should mean the TV broadcast takes pictures of your time dilation and sends them?

When you arrive they believe you live a very long life, but your metabolism is very slow compared to them.
The first thing they offer you in a new clock that works properly smile

I'm glad you had some idea what i was talking about, because when i read it i didn't *lol*

It was worded poorly.

But you did get the general idea.
I was trying to convey the idea that light itself might be strange because of the speed it travels at.

What if?
Light created that travels faster than the speed of light slips out of time and we never see it created.
Or the fabric of time simply won't allow light to go beyond  a set speed.

Light created that travels slower than the speed of light lasts for it's trillionth of a second and again we never see it created.
Or the fabric of time won't allow light to be created at slower than a set speed.

Only the light traveling at the correct speed has the properties to last forever, only due to its speed being exactly that of time.

Light travels from anywhere to anywhere instantly  due to the light traveling at the same speed as time, but we see it taking time because of our relativity.
Light never breaks down because it feels no time or space.

Something about the 186,000 mps has an answer to it.
Now if someone only knew what question to ask smile

Seems logical, but then again so did pet rocks.

Just a thought in pure speculation here smile

And i agree dicktice, something is really weird and not understood about light.
It just is--isn't a great explination for light.

As for the spaceship It was a ferrari so it was pretty darn fast smile
And i've been called worse.

I can't speak for anyone elses math, but mine decreases proportionally to the coffee supply    c=m/s    smile

This is a  thought that has puzzled me for ages.

You get on a spaceship that allows you to travel at the speed of light (new Ferrari space ship with all the options) and head to a very distant part of the universe.

The aliens at you destination watch your trip through a very powerful telescope (like vlt but way bigger).

They see you taking an awful long time to get there.
But since you are traveling at the speed of light it takes you no time to arrive.

The aliens great great grandchildren are sure you live forever because millions of generations have seen you heading towards them, and you just don't age, nor does your spacecraft.

If you overshoot the aliens home world just a bit, and they decide to measure and see why.
Do they see you as a wave or a particle? or both?

It seems to answer why light always goes at light speed, and why light seems to last forever.
Well in my mind anyway smile but then i need another cup of coffee smile
And i sure wish i had invested in the aspirin companies stock smile

Thanks for the calculations.
I just knew a math wizz was here somewhere smile

Now all we need is a 50mw nuclear generator and plutonium, a launch vehicle, some expensive magnets and acceleration tube, a super computer to control the acceleration and release, a few tons of particle accelerant, and a few good astronauts to assemble it in space.
And maybe a good politician to let the nuclear activists know about the plutonium heading into space.

You don't happen to know anyone with these things just sitting around in the garage collecting dust, other than the politician?

Any ideas on developing such an idea?
I did propose this exact idea to JPL about 12 years ago with a very poor response.
So i put the idea away and went to study more on it.
Not sure if i stepped on toes with the idea, or that my lack of any science degree made them immediately dismiss it before considering it.

I seek no monetary gains from the idea.
Just that the idea gets out and gets going.

And you would think who ever invented them would be pretty darn proud about the invention and leave some schematics lying around somewhere smile

And the only factor stopping this from being done right now is the amount of energy required to do it.?
And money of course smile

The electricity costs might not be as much you would think.

In space you can have super cooled magnets that are very efficient, an acceleration tube filled with only the vacuum of space so very little resistance for the accelerating particle.
And no need to try and brute force the acceleration as the conservation of momentum allows you to slowly accelerate particles to the fastest the acceleration circle can take before releasing them out the back as thrust.

I think a small nuclear reactor might fill the bill for electricity requirements.

At this point i bet a math wizz would come in handy smile

It seems that conservation of momentum no matter how hard you try to cheat is not going to allow a way to gain forward thrust.

In my initial idea for space travel i thought that a force gained in throwing and loosing momentum  no matter how small could gain a velocity.

My initial idea was to make a tube inside a spacecraft that accelerated particles down one end of the spaceship, and decelerated them on the return trip.

But since conservation of momentum won't allow this, then couldn't you simply use a particle accelerator inside the spacecraft in a semi circular magnetic tube.?

Accelerate the particles as close to light speed as the magnets will drive them.
Then release them out the back of the spaceship?
Now you should have a net thrust at very high velocities.


fermilab does this with current technology to about 99% the speed of light.

I bet the electricity bill will be nasty for this though smile

I think i have a better understanding of the dynamics of photons after your post.

I've always wondered if light traveling at the maximum velocity anything can go has 0 relativity.
Does light last forever only  because it travels at light speed?
With 0 relativity it should be able to go from one end of the universe to the other end in no time relative to the rest of the universe.
If light only lives for 1 second but that second last forever because of relativity.

But since the ball returns to us with most of its energy we get a backwards force each time we throw it and catch it.
And of course a slight sideways motion as the ball goes around the curve of the tube.

Both actions  throwing and catching the ball push you backwards along with the spaceship?

Bear with me for keeping this rubber ball example, but i do have a very good idea in mind.

Not looking for perpetual motion, just motion smile

What happens if we trow the ball and don't hits the end wall?.

Do the same thing when throwing the ball.
But this time throw the ball directly into a tube that returns to you round a corner without hitting the back wall.

You thow the ball.
It goes down a tube bolted to the wall inside the spacecraft.
The ball Never hits the end wall.
It goes round the corner of the tube near the end of the spacecraft.
And returns to you where you catch and stop it.

We loose some energy on the return corner but the ball never stops until you catch it.

Now we should have thrust without conservation of momentum being a factor?

Please feel free to post why this won't work...

I you were to stand inside a spaceship at the front of the spaceship with your back placed firmly against the wall.
Facing towards the back you throw a rubber ball as hard as you can.
Then you would get a backward velocity until the ball hits the back of the spacecrafts wall.?

As the ball bounces of the back wall it looses some of its energy on the end wall you threw it at, but the bulk of the energy returns in the elasticity of the ball?

When the ball bounces of the end wall and you catch it and stop it from where you originally threw it , then it will also push you backwards.
Whatever energy you put into throwing the ball will be the net thrust minus air friction inside the spacecraft.

Just doing a bit of follow up on the light speed question.

In einstiens theory is should take all of the energy in the universe to get anything to light speed.

But what about light itself?
It seems to be already traveling at light speed.
And it is a duality partical in most theories.

My thought is, what is the relativity for light itself?
And why does light not break down to a form with less energy than light over great distances.?

All other radiation forms do break down over time and distance, why not light?

As for speed limitation. i type with 2 fingers so that is my universal speed limit. smile
